Six reasons families love homestay hosting

Hosting is more than just a spare room. It can strengthen your household financially and create a genuinely rewarding cultural exchange.

Extra income

Earn a weekly payment that helps with household costs by sharing a spare room and the level of support that suits your household.

Cultural exchange

Share your local way of life and learn about another culture through everyday conversation, meals, and routines.

Companionship

Many hosts find that welcoming a student brings positive energy, company, and a real sense of connection at home.

Mentorship

You can make a meaningful difference to a young person adjusting to life in a new city and country.

Share local knowledge

Simple guidance on transport, shopping, local customs, and study life can make a big difference to a student.

Personal growth

Hosting often broadens your worldview and leads to friendships and experiences that last well beyond the stay.

What students need from you

Most students are looking for a comfortable, supportive home environment. The essentials are straightforward.

A private, furnished bedroom Students need their own room with a bed, wardrobe, desk, and good lighting. It does not need to be large, but it must be comfortable and private.
Bathroom access A shared bathroom is usually fine. A private bathroom is a bonus and may allow you to charge a higher weekly rate.
Reliable internet Students study online, keep in touch with family, and manage day-to-day life on their devices, so dependable Wi-Fi is essential.
A welcoming household Homestay is not just a room rental. Students expect to live in a home with clear house rules, respect, and day-to-day support.
Meals are your choice You decide whether to provide meals, partial meals, or kitchen access only. What you include should be clear in your listing.

Tip: Browse current host listings before you register. It is the fastest way to understand how hosts in your area describe their home, room, and household.

How payments work

Paris Homestay does not process host and student payments. You agree on the arrangement directly with the student.

Before arrival, agree on rates, meals, move-in dates, and house rules in writing so expectations are clear on both sides.

Browse current host listings in Paris before setting your rate so you can see how similar homes are positioned.

Note: Rates vary by suburb, room quality, meals, and transport access. If you offer more, students will generally expect to pay more.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the questions we hear most often from new hosts.

No. Meals are entirely your choice. Many hosts offer breakfast and dinner, which is the most common arrangement. Others provide no meals but allow students to cook for themselves. If you do not provide meals, make sure students have access to the kitchen. Providing meals generally allows you to charge a higher weekly rate.

Most homestay arrangements run from 3 months to 2 years, with a full academic year being the most common. Shorter-term stays of a few weeks do occur, particularly for secondary school program students, but the majority of students on Paris Homestay are here for extended study.

No. Students can share a bathroom with the household. It is common and perfectly acceptable. A private or en-suite bathroom is a bonus that can make your listing more attractive and allow you to charge a premium, but it is not a requirement to host.

Yes, absolutely. You are always in control. When a student contacts you, you can review their profile, exchange messages, and decide whether it is a good fit before agreeing to anything. You can also specify preferences in your listing, such as whether you prefer male or female students, whether you have pets, or whether you have young children at home.

Paris Homestay is a directory and connection platform. We do not process payments between hosts and students. Payment arrangements are agreed directly between you and your student. We recommend collecting a two-week bond before the student arrives and agreeing on a weekly or fortnightly payment schedule.

Issues are rare but usually come from unclear expectations around noise, kitchen use, guests, or study hours. Clear house rules before arrival prevent most problems. If the arrangement genuinely is not working, both parties should give reasonable notice. A two-week notice period is a sensible minimum courtesy.

Location matters to students mainly in terms of commute. They want reasonable access to their place of study by public transport or car. Areas within 30 to 45 minutes of major campuses and city centres are often very popular. Even outer suburbs with good train or bus connections are in demand. Include your nearest station or bus stop in your listing to help students assess suitability.
